Got a scary letter? Photograph it. Know exactly what it means, what to say, and what to do — in five minutes.

Photograph the letter

Front page is enough. Add the back or a second page if there's a charges summary. Nothing is shared with the creditor.

  • What the letter actually means — which threats are real (most can't cut you off) and what the deadline really is.
  • Check before you pay — the questions that often shrink the balance: liability dates, statute-barred charges, leaks, discounts, back-billing.
  • Your options, best first — the creditor's own hardship schemes by name, payment plans, benefit deductions, free protections.
  • A phone script — word-for-word, with your reference and amount already in it.
  • An email you can copy and send — formal, correct, ready to go.
  • In your language — the explanation and email translated; the phone script kept in English for the call.

Why people use it

The deadline is usually a "make contact" deadline

Most letters stop escalating the moment you ring and either agree a plan or dispute the amount. Knowing that changes everything.

The amount is often wrong

Previous occupiers' charges, leaks, back-billing beyond 12 months, six-year-old balances. You ask the right questions before you pay a penny.

Schemes nobody tells you about

Every water company, energy supplier and council has hardship schemes and write-off funds. We name them so you can ask for them.

Straight answers

Is this debt advice?

No. DebtSense is an information service: it explains the letter, the rules that apply and the options that exist, and gives you the words to use. It isn't regulated debt counselling and it doesn't recommend an insolvency solution. If you have several debts, the report points you to free FCA-authorised advisers.

Why don't you cover credit cards, loans or car finance?

Advice about consumer-credit debts is FCA-regulated. Rather than pretend otherwise, we decline those letters, take no payment, and send you to StepChange or National Debtline, who are free and authorised.

What happens to my photo?

It's used to read the letter and produce your report, then it isn't stored. The extracted facts and your report are kept so you can reopen the link. SmartScanit Group Ltd is registered with the ICO (ZC189364).

Can I get it in another language?

Yes. Choose the language before you pay. The explanation, options and email translation come in that language; the phone script and the email to send stay in English because that's what the creditor needs.
